Be Climate Conscious

I PLEDGE TO

Reduce my unnecessary environmental impacts, reduce my carbon footprint, minimize my waste, and recycle and reuse what I can.
The people of the Mahoosucs think long-term. Whether it is a million-year-old gem, a hundred-year-old tree, or a two-year-old fish, we are surrounded by a world shaped and created by nature. We like it this way. We want to keep it this way. That means thinking about our climate impact, not adding waste or plastics to our waterways, and not spoiling our dark skies. Let’s all do our part, together.
DO YOUR BIT
Small actions can add up to making a big difference when it comes to reducing our negative impact on the environment.  Consider taking small actions during your trip that can add up. Here are a few ideas:
  • Consider what you can reduce as you pack. Try and eliminate the waste that you’d otherwise leave behind.
  • Bring reusable containers: coffee mugs, water bottles, food containers, etc.
  • Purchase rechargeable batteries for your devices
  • Turn your car off, don’t let it idle! The rule of thumb is that its more efficient to turn your car off if you’re going to be sitting for longer than 25 seconds.
EAT LOCAL!
Eating local is not only healthier and helps to sustain local businesses, but when you buy food that doesn’t have to travel far to your plate, you’re also reducing your carbon footprint. Learn more about how to eat like a local here.
CHOOSE EFFICIENT TRANSPORTATION

How you travel can have a big impact on our environment! To help reduce your carbon footprint and minimize congestion, please consider carpooling to our region.  Alternatively, drive or rent an electric vehicle. We have plenty of charging stations!  View EV charging stations and plan your trip at Plug Share.

REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE + REGENERATE

Our community recycles, but providing the infrastructure for visitors to do so is something we’re working on.  Search out a recycling receptacle at a local business if one cannot be found curbside.  If you’re shopping for clothes or gear, consider buying used! We have great consignment shops in Bethel.

And, know that innovative community leaders are working behind the scenes to incorporate sustainable practices.  For example, Pleasant River Farms collects food waste from local restaurants, breweries, resorts, schools and the local community to turn into compost for area farmers. In 2020 they diverted 1,000,000 pounds of food waste from the waste stream!

TAKE THE PLEDGE

WE INVITE YOU TO EMBRACE OUR COMMUNITIES AND WAY OF LIFE, TODAY AND INTO THE FUTURE.
